In Peru farmers are being encouraged to raise a crop of a different kind. Moves are afoot to persuade farmers to raise paiche, a huge, endangered fish known for its flaky meat, instead of the traditional trade in coca leaves.

Bolivia moves to protect coca name

Coca leaf farmers in Bolivia are claiming that the leaf is part of Bolivia's cultural heritage and merits protection similar to other regional products such as champagne and feta cheese. It they get there way, firms such as Coca-Cola may have to stop using the name.

Barbados revamps the sugar industry

Pilot Farm Ready to Export Blueberries

In a pilot project a farm of 10 hectares was utilized to grow blueberries. Cimar Rocha, director of the project was pleased and stated that this project could be successfully repeated in other zones. At present the project is working in Tarija, Boliva and due to the lack of supplies in the Northern hemispher from November to March there is a great potential for blueberry export
