Hugo Chavez, at his swearing in on January 8, decided he wanted to emphasize his socialist revolution by renaming Venezuela's official name to "Socialist Republic of Venezuela". Instead he has changed his mind and the official name will remain the "Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela". The name is in honor of Simon Bolivar, the Venezuela-born Liberator of most of Spanish South America.
