Since June there has been a 40 percent drop of illegal immigrants crossing the border on the north. One of the main reasons is the 6000 National Guard troops which were sent to the border in May.

Joint US/Peruvian Airshow awes crowdTopics: • military •
A crowd of more than 15,000 Peruvians watched a sky filled with Peruvian and U.S. aircraft during a joint air show that kicked off here Feb. 17. As part of the air show, a team of 13 Peruvian special forces jumped from a U.S. C-130 waving the U.S. flag to symbolize the bond between the United States and Peru. The awe-stricken crowd was very happy about the joint air show and thankful for the U.S. participation.

Paramilitary investigation brings more politicians into questionTopics: • military •
Preliminary investigations into four more politicians commenced after it was revealed that they signed a 2001 letter of understanding with the paramilitary groups. An additional 4, including the foreign minister's brother have been ordered to submit to additional questioning. Some 30 politicians signed the letter. The pact proposed "rebuilding our country" and the creation of a "new social contract." Some of the politicians have claimed they were coerced into signing, others said they thought it was the foundation for a peace process.

Chilean Navy goes co-edTopics: • military •
For the first time in it’s history the Chilean navy has accepted women. 44 female cadets joined the ranks of male cadets in parade. Women will be allowed to achieve full ranks and careers – everything in the Navy is wide open to them. The only exceptions in the Chilean military will be the Marines and the Submarine corp. The marines are closed for physical reasons and the Submarine corps cannot provide adequate conditions at this time because of space limitations. But that may change in the future as well.

During her visit to La Paz last week, Chilean Defense Minister Vivianne Blanlot madae it clear that while extensive joint military cooperation and border de-mining would be approved, Ceding sovereignity of Chilean territory to proveide ocean access would not. Blanlot states that public sentiment is overwhelmingly against it, so she will not recommend it.
