Panamanian Episcopal Bishop Julio Murray was elected the first black president of the Latin American Council of Churches. The race was a tightly contested one, taking three rounds of voting. Bishop Murray amassed the second highest number of votes in the first voting round against the third candidate -- Pastor Oscar Bolioli, president of the Methodist Church in Uruguay.
