Zoologists discovered a new species of mammal in the Manu National Park during a field survey in 1999 but the naming and official description were only just released. The creature is nocturnal and resembles a squirrel.

At night turtles bury their eggs on several beaches on the Azuero Peninsula and unfortunately hundreds of people would go to the beaches and collect the turtle eggs for sale. This was jeopardizing the survivle of the olive ridley sea turtle.

Wildlife conservationists are celebrating evidence that proves this subspecies of guanaco still persists. The guanaco is a flagship species for the ecosystems of South America, an ecological equivalent to the kangaroo in Australia or the bison in the U.S. Dr. Andrew Taber says "Documenting this species' survival in the Paraguay Chaco is a critically important discovery, which, we hope, will galvanize officials to conserve this forgotten ecosystem."
